Mission
The University of Washington Department of Medicine’s diversity mission is committed to increasing the recruitment, retention and advancement of faculty, fellows and residents from groups under-represented in medicine as well as to promote an inclusive and equitable environment across the department.
To align with these goals, the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition offers:
- Diverse training environments across three different medical centers serving the Puget Sound and WWAMI region.
- Training opportunities for clinical trainees and postdoctoral fellows from diverse backgrounds.
- Clinical training opportunities focused on different populations including diabetes in the LatinX community, transgender care, and endocrine management of the aging population.
- Focus on improving patient care access and the patient care experience for people of color including improving access to Diabetes and Endocrine specialty care in the south end of Seattle and King County.
- Expanding telehealth services to improve access to care for underserved populations.

University of Washington Network of Underrepresented Residents and Fellows (UW-NURF)
UW-NURF is a diverse body of residents, fellows and faculty representing all specialties. UW-NURF is sponsored by the Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Office of Multicultural Affairs and aims to promote cultural diversity in medicine through community involvement, mentorship, professional networking, and recruitment of Underrepresented Minorities (URM) in Medicine.
Office of Graduate Student Equity & Excellence
The UW Graduate School is committed to expanding graduate education to everyone. Many of GSEE’s events and programming are geared toward underrepresented minority graduate students and are open to all University of Washington graduate students, faculty and staff, especially those interested in maintaining and increasing a racially diverse graduate student population.
Department of Medicine Diversity Council
The Department of Medicine Diversity Council was formed in 2014 with a goal to report and provide guidance on how to increase and sustain diversity in our faculty, training programs and staff.
The University of Washington is part of Research exchange, an alliance of the nation’s most prominent universities with the goal of increasing the advancement of diverse PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, by facilitating joint mentorship, scientific collaboration, career development and guidance.
University of Washington Affinity Groups
Affinity groups are supported by the University of Washington as a way to advance recruitment and retention efforts. Organizations in higher education and the corporate sector have used affinity groups as a way to build community and to improve recruitment and retention of diverse talent.
